Hungary condemns religious, ethnic and national community incitement

Tristan Azbej

"Hungary condemns incitement against religious, ethnic, or national communities, acts that result in the violation of their dignity," said Tristan Azbej, the State Secretary responsible for programs aiding persecuted Christians at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

In the region of Jaranwala in Pakistan, extremists have recently attacked the local Christian community. They ransacked their churches and homes, desecrated their sacred objects, and burned Bibles. “Many have been forced to flee their homes,” stated Tristan Azbej, the State Secretary responsible for aiding persecuted Christians.

“We condemn the violent acts for which no justification or legitimate reason can be given. We welcome the strong condemnation of the Jaranwala attacks by Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister, and his promise to hold the perpetrators accountable. We trust that the Pakistani state, an important partner for our country in the region, will do everything in its power to ensure that the Christian community lives in peace and security,” the Secretary said.

“As we recently mentioned, regarding Quran burnings in some European countries, Hungary condemns incitement against religious, ethnic, or national communities and acts that result in the violation of their dignity. We are firmly committed to promoting dialogue between religions and cultures and showing respect for religious communities,” Azbej stated.

“We extend our sincere solidarity to the attacked Pakistani Christian community,” wrote the State Secretary, adding that Hungary, through the Hungary Helps program, supports persecuted Christians and other communities in need.
