In a letter to the bishops, the Metropolitan of Mumbai recalled that “millions of abortions” have been carried out there since the introduction of legal abortions and that there is no “slowing down of this loss of life trend”. The Hierarchy explained that the purpose of the Mourning Day is to “express the pain of killing unwanted children and promote living attitudes” in society.

“God is the creator of life,” Bishop Thomas Elavanal told Asia News. “Life is sacred and precious in the eyes of God, so it should be protected and supported from the very first moment, from the mother’s womb to the grave,” he added.

Doctor from Bombay, Dr. Pascoal Carvalho, a member of the Pontifical Academy of Life, emphasised that “any medical treatment should be aimed solely at saving lives.” Hence, calling abortion a “medical procedure” is “a subtle way of masking a hideous act against a vulnerable person.” Carvalho noted that “from the moment of conception, that is, from the first day of life in the mother’s womb, a child is a person and has the same rights as all adults.”
