Hindu group demands probe into the activities of Caritas India

A Hindu group issued a complaint and demanded a probe into the activities of Caritas India, as well as the matter of foreign aid from them.

A Hindu group, called the Legal Rights Protection Forum (LRPF), that is aligned with the ruling Hindu nationalist party, demanded a probe into the activities of Caritas India. The group said that Caritas India is a national, social, and economic threat.

The organization that belongs to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India denies the baseless accusations and says that the allegations are false and that they conform with all government regulations.

The LRPF not only wishes for a probe, but they also want the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) of Caritas India to be canceled. Without the FCRA, they would not be able to receive foreign funds necessary for their charity work.

In their complaint, the LRPF further accuses Caritas India of trying to cause social disharmony through religious conversion. The accusation goes further with the allegation of targeting vulnerable groups, such as tribal people and Dalits (former untouchables), and making them abandon their faith and convert to Christianity.

An official from Caritas India said that the complaint is only used to create further confusion during the upcoming election period.
