The alleged murderer of Fr. Michael Maingi Kyengo, killed in 2019, has been arrested

The alleged murderer of a Catholic priest who was killed in 2019 and who fled after his release was arrested. He had been on the run for a year.

 

Michael Muthini Mutunga was released on bail of 300,000 Kenyan shillings by a court in Embu but did not later appear at the hearing. The authorities then issued another arrest warrant. The man is accused of having kidnapped and then killed Fr. Michael Maingi Kyengo. The Catholic clergyman was deputy parish priest of Thatha, in the diocese of Machakos.

The priest was kidnapped on the 8th of October in 2019. His body was found buried on the banks of the Mashamba River in Makima, Embu County. In connection with the crime, investigators arrested Mutunga, then 25, who was in possession of the missing priest’s cell phone, car and credit card.

Cornered, the man led the police to the place where the body of Fr. Kyengo was. The murderer is said to have strangled the priest and then slit his throat.
