Over three hundred million Christians suffer from persecution worldwide
The situation of Christians in the world worsened in 2020 in many countries of the world, alarms the International Christian Work "Open Doors". According to the organisation's "Index of Persecution in the World 2020", approximately 309 million Christians worldwide suffer from expulsions, surveillance and discrimination by governments, society or their own family.
The index covers the fifty countries where Christians are most persecuted. It clearly shows that in the past year “the intensity of persecution has significantly worsened”, e.g. the number of Christians murdered for the sake of their faith increased from 2,983 in 2019 to at least 4,761 in 2020.
“For the first time in the history of the World Persecution Index, all fifty countries analysed show not only a high but even a very high level of persecution,” commented Kurt Igler, representative of the Open Doors office in Vienna for the Austrian Catholic agency Kathpress.
North Korea was ranked first in the world index for the twentieth time in a row. The following places were taken by Afghanistan, Somalia, Libya, Pakistan and Eritrea.
