Mother of four sentenced to death for blasphemy
The Christin mother was arrested in 2021 after she was accused of blasphemy. Allegedly, she shared blasphemous content on WhatsApp in 2020 that later was reported. Three years after her arrest, she was sentenced to death but remains strong in her faith and hopes the superior court's decision will be more positive.
On September 18, a Pakistani Christian woman, mother of four, was sentenced to death on blasphemy charges. She was convicted under Section 295-C of Pakistan’s blasphemy law for insulting Prophet Muhammad, a charge that carries a mandatory death sentence.
Allegedly, she shared blasphemous content on WhatsApp in 2020. A Muslim man filed a complaint against her, saying that she insulted Prophet Muhammad. Attorney Rana Abdul Hameed told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News that,
“Kiran has maintained that she has not authored the content and had forwarded it in the WhatsApp group without reading it.”
The former nurse was a member of several interfaith groups where she defended her faith.
“I met her after the judge issued the sentence and can confirm that she is very hopeful of a positive outcome from the superior courts. However, she misses her family a lot and wants to reunite with them as soon as possible,”
said Hameed. Furthermore, he added that the outcome did not come as a surprise since almost every charge under Section 295-C ends with a death sentence. In most of these cases, the accused is convicted because of pressure from Islamist groups and because of the fear of mob violence, no matter how weak the case is or how insufficient the proof is. The attorney said that he will file an appeal and is hopeful about the positive outcome of it. According to him, all the previous cases that ended with such decisions were overturned by superior courts.
