Boko Haram kidnapped hundreds of children in Nigeria

The drama of several hundred Nigerian students kidnapped on Friday evening most likely by the Islamists of Boko Haram continues. There are fears that terrorists want to put pressure on the president, who has announced some concessions to them before the elections and is now withdrawing from his promises.

The kidnapping took place in the town of Kanakra. The attackers fired Kalashnikovs at the school. The pupils were taken by school buses and then rushed on foot through the forest. Some, however, managed to escape.

There have been no such spectacular attacks by Islamists in the state of Katsina so far. That is why the Nigerian authorities maintain that this time ordinary bandits are behind the attack.

However, Fr. Patrick Alumuku, spokesman for the Archdiocese of Abuja in the capital does not agree with this analysis. In his opinion, the Islamists deliberately chose the state of Katsina, because President Muhammadu Buhari, on whom they want to put pressure, comes from that region.

“It was a Boko Haram robbery. This group often attacks schools because it opposes education. It is clear to us that this time Boko Haram is behind it as well,” he told Vatican Radio.
