“By the decision of the Armenian government, martial law and general mobilisation are introduced in the Republic. The decision takes effect at the time of publication, ”wrote Nikol Pashinyan on Facebook. Earlier, martial law and general mobilisation were announced by the Nagorno-Karabakh authorities.

In response, Azerbaijan stressed that there was no need for a military mobilisation due to the escalation of tensions around Karabakh, as its army was fully prepared.

Azerbaijan and Armenia blame each other for escalating the situation. According to Yerevan, Azerbaijani forces attacked civilian settlements in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. In turn, the defence ministry in Baku said that the Armenian armed forces “carried out large provocations” and fired on positions of the Azerbaijani army and border towns.

The armed conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh broke out in 1988, just before the collapse of the USSR. The clashes turned into a war between the already independent Armenia and Azerbaijan; it caused around thirty thousand fatalities.

In 1994, an armistice was signed. The Armenian-controlled enclave, although it has declared secession, formally remains part of Azerbaijan. In recent months, clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan have intensified in this region.
