Catholic priest murdered in El Salvador
Father Ricardo Antonio Cortéz was shot dead on the 7th of August. According to what the Diocese of Zacatecoluca reported to Agenzia Fides. The priest was killed in a shooting that took place on the highway that connects San Salvador to various municipalities in the department of La Paz and the eastern coastal zone
According to a note sent to Fides, Salvadoran public security authorities have not provided details of the ongoing investigation established to shed light on the facts and identify the culprits.
Between 2015 and 2018, the average number of murders recorded in the area ranged from 50.3 to 103 per 100,000 inhabitants. These crimes have been mainly attributed to the Mara Salvatrucha gangs.
