Pope Francis expressed his grief about Hagia Sophia becoming a mosque
Pope Francis expressed his grief over the conversion of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul into a mosque. The decision was made by the Turkish President Erdogan on the 9th of July.
“I think of Hagia Sophia and I am very saddened” said the Holy Father in an improvised addition to the greetings he addressed to the participants of the “Angelus” prayer in the Vatican.
To date, the Holy See has not taken an official position on the transformation of Hagia Sophia into a mosque. The first Muslim prayer in this former Christian basilica is scheduled for the 24th of July.
