Statue of a saint decapitated in Belgium

Last Sunday, an act of vandalism targeting the statue of Saint Arnulf took place in the French-speaking town of Bouillon in southern Belgium.

This act comes just as debates are raging over the removal of the statues of Belgian King Leopold II and his alleged involvement in the massacre of Congolese slaves in what used to be Belgian Congo at the beginning of the 20th century.

“I hope it has nothing to do with it,” says Patrick Adam, the local mayor, “but I don’t really see the connection between the two anyway.”

A complaint has been filed with local police. “Thanks to the cameras that are installed by the municipality we will be able to recover images,” concluded Adam. We do not want this act to go unpunished. “
