Early in the morning, Father Remigio Lewandowski opened the door of the church, and saw a sight that he will probably remember for a long time. Both the area around one of the chapels and the entrance door were stained with human excrement. Faeces were also found on benches and on the always shiny floor.

The clergyman told the police that this was the first such disgusting act to take place in his church. To date, they have not found any evidence leading to the perpetrators of this hideous desecration.

An online statement of the diocese of Spoleto-Norcia reads: “This is a sign of glaring ignorance and an insult to the holy place and the sensitivity of believers, not only from our community. We express solidarity with the community of the Capuchin Friars Minor, who must have witnessed such a repugnant event.”

The Capuchin brothers of  Spoleto will activate the cameras that were installed some time ago in both the monastery and the church.
