Statue of St. Junipero Serra has been vandalised in San Francisco
In the United States, vandalism continues to be an expression of "fighting racism". This time vandals in San Francisco destroyed the statue of St. Junipero Serra. This Franciscan missionary is considered as the founder of the city.
According to American media, about one hundred people participated in the destruction of the monument which was knocked down from its pedestal to the ground.
St. Junipero is an important figure for San Francisco. He is considered to be the founder of the city. From the 1860s, he headed missions that played a key role in converting local people to Christianity.
Born in 1713, Father Junipero Serra was a Spanish missionary who worked first in Mexico and then in California. He is known as the “apostle of California” where he founded a total of nine missions, including San Diego de Alcalá, Santa Clara de Asis and San Francisco de Asis. He personally supervised other missions along the coast from the headquarters in Carmel. He died in 1784.
