Protest held outside UN headquarters over Christian persecution in Pakistan

A silent protest took place last Saturday in front of the United Nations front office in Geneva to raise a voice in solidarity to eradicate the malicious blasphemy law and forced conversions in Pakistan.

The ongoing mistreatment of Christians and other religious minorities in Pakistan is an issue of immense importance that nevertheless receives little attention from the UN or international human rights organisations.

Places of worship like churches have become an easy target for Islamic fundamentalists. According to the protesters who gathered in Geneva, Christians, Hindus and other religious minorities are routinely subject to discrimination and harassment.

A twenty-two-years old Pakistani Christian was severely tortured because he used his landlord’s tube-well for bathing. He died three days later due to the severity of his injuries.

The message conveyed by the protesters urged the UN to pray for the protection of Christian women and girls who regularly fall victim of rape and forced marriage as well as for all the Christians facing the unfair consequences of the country’s blasphemy law.

Abduction, sexual assault, forced marriage and forces conversions remain a part of the harsh reality of the Christian community in Pakistan.
