Statue depicting Saint Anthony vandalised in Belgium

Behind the chapel of San Anthony from the Velzeke sanctuary in East Flanders, there are several statues representing what is called the "Miracle of Rimini".

The story of this miracle that took place in Italy in the 13th century during which a donkey deprived of food for several days, turned away from the one proposed to him by his master – supposedly a Cathar according to sources – and knelt before the monstrance containing a consecrated host which Saint Anthony of Padua placed before his eyes.

The head of Saint Anthony and those of the other two characters in the group were destroyed last Sunday. For good measure, the stone pedestal on which a bronze head of Saint Anthony is fixed, and located at the entrance of the sanctuary, has been smeared with black and the mention “krapull” (scoundrel in Dutch – editor’s note).
