Responsible of Rwandese genocide arrested after twenty-five years

The French police arrested a man accused of financing the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. The 84-year-old criminal Felicien Kabuga was wanted for 25 years by international courts.

Kabuga was arrested in Asnieres-Sur-Seine near Paris, where he was hiding under a false name for many years. He is accused of financing the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.

The massacre in Rwanda was initiated by the death of the then President Juvenal Habyarimana of the Hutu tribe whose plane was shot down. They accused Tutsis of his death. The UN troops stationed in Rwanda at the time were powerless in the face of the massacres because their mandate did not allow military action.

On the 21st of April 1994, the UN Security Council decided to withdraw the majority of UNAMIR. It issued a resolution condemning crimes but did not describe them as genocide. On the 23rd of June, with the consent of the UN, French troops entered Rwanda. In August, the Tutsis took power.

According to UN observers, government troops massacred Hutus in refugee camps in the second half of the year.
