Partial reopening of the Sanctuary in Lourdes: “A great sign of hope”
The Marian shrine in Lourdes will be partially opened "for individual pilgrims from the surrounding area" from this Saturday the 16th of May.
The sanctuary was closed on the 17th of March due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is a first in the history of the sanctuary. The decision to “partially open” is the result of the gradual abolition in France of restrictions introduced to combat the spread of COVID-19.
“Reopening this Saturday is a great sign of hope! I am very happy and on this occasion I want to appeal: help the shrine rise!” said the rector of the shrine, Fr. Olivier Ribadeau Dumas.
The sanctuary is located in the department of Eastern Pyrenees, in the region of Occitania. It is one of the largest centres of Marian worship in the world. Every year, several million faithful visit here, including sick pilgrims.
