Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller defends his signing of an “Appeal to the Church and the World”
Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller defends his signing of the "Appeal to the Church and the World", which came from the initiative of Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò. The appeal, signed by various cardinals, several bishops and many prominent Catholic theologians and activists, supports the fight against Christian civilisation and its replacement under the guise of concern for technological health with tyranny, which is to reduce humanity to the virtual dimension.
The text was very critically received by the German Bishops’ Conference. Its president, Bishop Georg Bätzing, said that the German hierarchs did not share the assessment of the coronavirus crisis contained in the appeal and believe that the restrictions introduced, including those regarding the celebration of the Mass, were rational and responsible.
According to the vicar general of the Diocese of Essen, Fr. Klaus Pfeffer, the appeal “expresses conspiracy theories and right-wing populist rhetoric.” In turn, Essen Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck, called for strong opposition to “populism and conspiracy theories” and called for the Church to preserve the “liberal, democratic and freedom foundations of society.”
In an interview with the Catholic portal Die Tagespost, Cardinal Gerhard Müller said that the appeal was used by some church circles to hit their opponents. “Today, anyone who thinks differently is accused of preaching conspiracy theories,” he said. He also regretted that the criticism is focused on him, although there are many signatories to the appeal.
The cardinal added that he agreed to place his signature under the text after a phone conversation and did not treat the appeal as some comprehensive scientific analysis.
