French Bishop denounces the “anticlerical tropism” of French leaders
Following the speech of French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe's at the National Assembly, Fr. Matthieu Rougé, Bishop of Nanterre, denounced the "anticlerical tropism" of French leaders in times of pandemic.
“I find that the Prime Minister’s three lapidary lines about worship are unacceptable. There is a lack of respect for believers and religious freedom which is incomprehensible,” explained Fr. Rougé.
“There is a kind of anticlerical tropism in general and perhaps anti-Catholic in particular, which has taken over from President Macron and perhaps even the Prime Minister, out of obedience to the head of the executive,” he continued.
“French Catholics must understand that some of our leaders have no spiritual life, no experience of faith, that the idea that our sacramental life is really important, is totally beyond their scope. Therefore, everything that is related to spirituality or prayer is negligible for them,” the Bishop concluded.
