Northern Ireland legalises abortion at home amid COVID-19 pandemic

The Ministry of Health of Northern Ireland issued guidelines for the fight against the coronavirus and granted permission to conduct early pharmacological abortions at home. To perform the "procedure", it is enough to consult a doctor by phone or online, and the appropriate means (pills) will be provided by post office or courier.

Women who want to kill their unborn child will no longer have to make two compulsory visits to a doctor before proceeding with a pharmacological abortion.

“In the current situation, where the most important thing is maintaining social distance, limiting personal contacts and relieving healthcare professionals as much as possible, a visit to the appropriate medical care worker may be impossible or inadvisable,” the Ministry’s guidelines say.

The guidelines of the Ministry of Health bring Northern Ireland into line with regulations in the UK. These guidelines are based on a previous decision made by the London Government to permit such a procedure in England. The new rules are to be applied for the next two years or until the epidemic is overcome.

A few days ago, the UN recognised abortion as a “necessary” medical procedure, qualifying for immediate action- if necessary – to be carried out even during an epidemic.

“Women’s choices and rights to healthcare in the area of sexual and reproductive health should be respected despite the COVID-19 context. This applies to access to contraception and safe abortion to the full extent of the law,” claims the WHO.
