The sanctuary of Lourdes closed for the first time in history

"For the first time in its history, the shrine in Lourdes is closing its gates," said Father Olivier Ribadeau Dumas who is rector of the holy site.

His decision is in response to regulations imposed by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, who tightened precautionary measures, effective from midday on the 17th of March.  The president decided to close all public places that are not necessary for the functioning of the state.

At the beginning of March, the sanctuary of Lourdes closed all the pools in which people immerse themselves in the hope of healing… due to fears of virus infection.

The water in the pools comes from a spring that gushed out during the Marian apparition to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858.
