Gibraltar will hold a referendum on abortion

The Parliament of Gibraltar has decided to hold a referendum on abortion. This British estate in the south of the Iberian Peninsula is a bastion defending life in Europe - killing an unborn child there is a crime that can even lead to life imprisonment.

As for the interpretation of the sanctity of life,  Gibraltar has been at odds with the United Kingdom so far. This situation may change in the near future.

Defenders of conceived children call for prayer for this patch of land and its inhabitants, who on March 19, 2020, will decide whether they want to remain among the life-defending communities of Europe.

The mere fact that the referendum will take place is the result of an effective campaign of the Gibraltar Pro-Life Movement, which has collected 6,000 signatures for a petition on this issue. In July last year, the Parliament passed an amendment to the law allowing the child to be killed in special conditions, but the final decision was left to the citizens.

Taking into account the voice of life defenders, a referendum was decided, while the age threshold for voters was lowered, allowing participation of 16-year-olds. If the majority of residents decide that they do not want to legalize abortion in, it will be a binding decision which could not be changed by the British Supreme Court or the European Court of Human Rights.
