Seven pro-life activists could face up to ten years in jail

Seven pro-life activists have been found guilty of violating federal civil rights law and the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act for their involvement in a 2020 blockade of an abortion clinic in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday that Calvin Zastrow, Eva Zastrow, Eva Edl, Chester Gallagher, Heather Idoni, Joel Curry, and Justin Phillips were convicted.

Under the FACE Act, individuals can face federal charges if they “intentionally injure, intimidate, or interfere with” someone providing “reproductive health services” through force, threats, or obstruction.

In addition to the FACE Act violations, each defendant has also been charged with “felony conspiracy against rights.”

Edl and Idoni are facing further charges related to a separate blockade at a Saginaw, Michigan, clinic in April 2021.
