Syrian Parliament recognizes Armenian genocide
On February 13, 2020, Syrian deputies voted to recognize the Armenian genocide. Between 1915 and 1917, around 1.5 million Armenians were deported and massacred by the Ottomans. This recognition comes against a backdrop of strong tensions with Turkey after deadly clashes in northern Syria.
“We are currently witnessing a Turkish aggression based on Ottoman racist ideology and we remember the crimes committed by Erdogan’s ancestors against the friendly Armenian people,” said Speaker of Parliament Hamomuda Sabbagh, quoted by the Sana news agency.
Nearly 30 countries have passed laws, resolutions or motions recognizing the genocide.
In December, the US Congress recognized the massacres as genocide. For its part, Turkey claims that it all happened in the context of a civil war and rejects the term genocide.
