President of the EP: “Auschwitz was built by Europeans”
The Wednesday 29 January 2020 session of the European Parliament began with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the German Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. During his speech, President of the EP David Sassoli stated that Europeans must take responsibility for the contruction of the concentration camps during WWII.
“The essence of humanity was questioned in Auschwitz by the will of the Nazi extermination regime of the Jewish people, and with it the Roma, Slavs, political opponents and homosexuals,” said the Italian politician. In his opinion, Europeans built Auschwitz and the other German concentration camps.
“This is a child of our history. The Nazis were the sons of good mothers, they came from cosmopolitan European families,” according to Sassoli. “The extermination would not have been possible without the involvement of Europe in this absolute evil – he argued. – Auschwitz was built by Europeans. We must take responsibility for them, fulfill our duties and never forget about it,” he added.
At Auschwitz, the Germans murdered over a million people, mainly Jews, Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war and people of other nationalities. The camp operated in the years 1940–1945. It was created on the orders of the head of SS Heinrich Himmler. Poles were the first prisoners of Auschwitz. On January 27, 1945, the Red Army liberated the camp. After the war, the camp infrastructure was used by the NKVD and the Ministry of Public Security.
