Donald Trump to U.N.: Refugees Should Return to Their Countries and ‘Make Them Great Again’
President Donald Trump’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday contained a message for migrants and refugees: “Remain in your own countries!” – This may not be the typical oppinion of most countries as yet, however, things are rapidly changing in Europe.
“Ultimately, the only long-term solution to the migration crisis is to help people build more hopeful futures in their home countries,” Trump said. “Make their countries great again.”
Trump commended Jordan for keeping Syrian refugees close to their country’s borders so they could return to their homeland when the conflict is resolved.
“The most compassionate policy is to place refugees as close to their homes as possible, to ease their eventual return to the heart of the rebuilding process,” he said.
The president said the United States would not participate in the United Nations Global Compact for Migration, citing the need to protect American sovereignty.
The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration claims be the first, intergovernmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, to cover all dimensions of international migration in a “holistic and comprehensive manner”.
The way Trump sees it, however, “Migration should not be governed by an international body, unaccountable to our own citizens,”
In July, more than 190 countries joined the Global Compact drafted by the United Nations.
In adopting the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, these 193 UN Member States recognized the need for a comprehensive approach to human mobility and enhanced cooperation at the global level and committed to:
- Protect the safety, dignity and human rights and fundamental freedoms of all migrants, regardless of their migratory status. (Among some other points)
- At all times and to strengthen global governance of migration, including by bringing IOM into the UN family and through the development of a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
Donald Trump first withdrew from the compact in December 2017, highlighting their differences in immigration policies.
The same thing Hungary did seven months later, in July 2018. As Hungary’s foreign minister Péter Szijjártó said: his country will pull out of a United Nations accord on migration to be adopted in December because it goes against his country’s security interests.
“The final text goes completely against common sense, it is in conflict with Hungary’s interests and efforts aimed at restoring stability in Europe”, he remarked and also emphasised:
The draft is aimed at “recklessly promoting migration” and focuses “exclusively on the interests of Africa and South America … as it defines migration as a fundamental human right, which is a false approach!”
