Nativity scene displayed at the U.S. Capitol for the first time
For the first time in U.S. history, a Nativity scene was showcased on the steps of the Capitol on Tuesday, marking what organizers consider a significant milestone for religious freedom and the First Amendment.
The event, featuring prayer, Christmas carols, and a reading of the Christmas story, was made possible by a pivotal federal court ruling. This decision affirmed Rev. Patrick Mahoney and his supporters’ right to peacefully celebrate the Christmas season on Capitol grounds.
Taking place on the southeastern steps of the Capitol, the display represented the culmination of a decade-long legal battle.
Rev. Mahoney, director of the Washington, D.C.-based Christian Defense Coalition, had previously faced threats of arrest for attempting to read the Christmas story from the Bible and set up a Nativity scene near the Capitol Christmas tree.
