Mozambique drops terrorism charges against missionary pilot helping orphans
33-year-old missionary pilot Ryan Koher was falsely accused of supporting rebels on the 7th November 2022. The Christian father of three spent over four months in prison.
Mr Koher was supposed to deliver essential supplies – including vitamins, medication and food preservatives – to an orphanage near Montepuez in northern Mozambique on the 2nd November 2022. During a routine security check, local police officers became suspicious of the contents and seized them. Due to the ongoing conflict and violence in the area, authorities considered all foreigners dealing with goods dubious. South African orphanage volunteers Willem du Plessis and Eric Dry were arrested at the same time as Mr Koher on the 7th November 2022. They were accused of terrorism, supporting rebels and were transferred to a prison in Inhambane.
Even though formal charges had not been made, the Christian men were transferred to Machava High Security Prison. Mr Koher was forced to spend Christmas away from his family, alone in a harsh prison cell. He was allowed to speak to them on the phone in January 2023. After almost five months of separation, he was finally reunited with his family on the 29th of March 2023 in Ambassador Aviation’s hangar in Nampula. He had to report regularly to the local police station.
A judge authorised all three Christian men’s leave in September 2023. They moved back to the USA.
Mr Koher was at Mission Aviation Fellowship’s headquarters in Nampa, Idaho, when he was informed that the investigation had officially been closed. He is relieved to be free from any prosecution and has voiced his gratitude: “It’s been a long journey and an uphill battle at times to get to this point of closure. This has not been possible without the many people who’ve been faithfully praying to this end. I would like to thank everyone for their prayers and love for our family. I pray that God will receive all the glory for His work in our lives.”
The Koher family intends to return to Mozambique in 2025.
Mr Koher will resume his pilot duties for Ambassador Aviation: “There has never been a point where Annabel and I lost the desire to return. Through this experience we have come to love the people of Mozambique more, and we are very excited to go back and continue serving there. We know from experience that God is faithful to carry us through hardship, so we can return in confidence, knowing that His plans for us are good, and that He will again help us in any time of trouble.”
