Nuns provide shelter to 800 refugees in Lebanon

Mother Joselyne Joumaa - the superior general of the Convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Good Help in Jabboulé - has offered refuge to people fleeing from northern Beqaa Governorate.
The Mother Superior and 14 other nuns run the facility that operates an orphanage and a school. Every morning they prepare breakfast and lunch for internally displaced people. They have established playgroups for children to help them deal with the situation. The good sisters also offer emotional support and pray with the refugees, many of whom help the sisters in the kitchen, chopping wood or carrying supplies.
Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need assists the sisters in their great effort by supplying food parcels and medicine for thousands of families. Since most schools in Lebanon are private, the charity also offers help with tuition fees and pastoral projects.
Mother Joumaa expressed her concerns about the approaching winter season and the fact their sources are limited: “On the first night of the bombing, dozens of people came running to take refuge with us. We are overwhelmed, and we can’t receive any more. They come to share with us their anguish and their fear of tomorrow. And we are also listening to them to respond to their material needs, which are many. Winter is coming. How will we provide heating, electricity, hot water? Thinking about tomorrow can pull us down because the daily tension is sometimes hard to bear. But our mission is to continue faithfully, and we ask you to support us with prayer.”
Mother Joumaa also shared how impressed the Muslim refugees were with the Christian approach: ” When the displaced parents themselves, gripped with panic, don’t manage to calm their children, it’s the Sisters who take them in their arms and assure them that they are safe because they are in the house of God.”
