Christian widow beaten up and charged with blasphemy in Pakistan

A Christian widow and mother of two in Pakistan, Saima Farhad, has been accused of blasphemy, beaten, and then arrested.

On August 7 in Kathore, Tehsil Gojra, Faisalabad, a neighbor accused 35-year-old Farhad of discarding torn and burned pages of the Quran in a sack outside her home, inciting mob violence and leading to her assault.

Farhad’s family has rejected the allegations, calling them false and driven by a personal vendetta. They are demanding justice from the authorities. Her cousin, Albert Masih, said the blasphemy charge stems from a housing dispute. According to him, their neighbor Mudassar placed an iron beam on Farhad’s wall during a construction project. Farhad objected, saying it was illegal and could damage her home, and she also sought financial compensation. In retaliation, Mudassar and his tenants began harassing and pressuring her to leave her home.

Shortly after, the accusation of blasphemy was made.

Masih further claimed that Mudassar threatened Farhad with a knife and attempted to attack her as a mob gathered outside her house. A Christian man in the crowd intervened, allowing Farhad to escape temporarily to a nearby field. However, the mob found her and attacked her while she was defenceless. The police arrived, dispersed the crowd, and arrested Farhad.
