Baptist pastor stabbed and his wife killed in Manchester

64-year-old Joshua Obinim is a caretaker and pastor at the Blessed Baptist Temple in Levenshulme. He, his wife and daughter were attacked on their way home on Sunday evening.

Pastor Obinim and his 17-year-old daughter are in hospital with life-threatening injuries. His 43-year-old wife died at the scene. Greater Manchester Police arrested a 22-year-old man in relation to the assault. 

Anthony Clement, the administrator of Blessed Baptist Temple expressed his grief and added: “They are a good church-going family. They are very good people.”

Alberta was a compassionate care worker and her community praised her for being “a mother to everyone”. 

Sergeant Adrian Girtchen stated: “We can feel the shock waves that this incident has sent through the local community, who either witnessed this attack or woke this morning to hear the tragic news. Many of you may know the family, and our thoughts and wishes remain with them and everyone who has been affected.”

According to Detective Superintendent Toby Facey: “We understand that the local community and further afield across Greater Manchester will be rightly shocked and concerned after waking up and hearing this tragic news this morning. Our thoughts remain with those affected and their loved ones at this difficult time. We are doing all we can to support them. Within minutes of the call being made, our officers were at the scene and an arrest had been made. An investigation has been launched and we are in the very early stages of our inquiries. We have had detectives on the ground who have been working throughout the night trying to get to the bottom of what has happened and why.”
