Anti-Christian and anti-Semitic attack were in Dagestan
In Derbent, an Orthodox church and a synagogue, and in Makhachkala, a church and a traffic police post were attacked a week ago: the motive is anti-Christian and anti-Semitic.
In Derbent, a priest and a police officer were killed, and another officer was injured. In Makhachkala, a church security guard and a police officer died, and six others were injured in the attack on religious facilities. The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation for terrorism.
Tristan Azbej, the Hungarian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, contacted the leaders of the Orthodox Christian and Jewish religious communities to express condolences and to express Hungary’s solidarity, as well as to offer support through the Hungary Helps program.
In the city of Derbent, Orthodox priest Nikolai Kotelnikov was murdered, and at the same time, a synagogue that is part of the World Heritage was set on fire. In Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, synagogues were shot at, and a police checkpoint was also attacked. According to reports, the gunmen also opened fire on civilians on the streets. Based on the information available, the tragedy resulted in the death of more than 15 people and many were injured, the Secretary stated.
“We, Hungarians, condemn Christianophobia and anti-Semitism, and stand by the victims. Let us pray for the victims and for the speedy recovery of the injured!” stated Tristan Azbej.
