Faithful in Botswana saddened by the sudden passing of their bishop

The bishop of Francistown in Botswana passed away at the age of 74 after a Rosary walk and Mass.

Bishop Anthony Pascal Rebello, bishop of Francistown, Botswana, passed away suddenly. Fr. Gabriel Afagbegee, the priest who was the host of the bishop during his stay in Johane Mokolobetsi, said about the death of the bishop,

“[It was] unexpected. He hadn’t been sick nor complained about anything amiss, health-wise.”

On Saturday morning, Bishop Rebello took on a 20-kilometer-long Rosary Walk in the company of the Catholic faithful. The bishop did not complain about any health problems during the walk.

After the Rosary Walk, all participants gathered together to celebrate the Eucharist. It was during the Mass that Bishop Rebello started feeling unwell. He was carried to the parish house and then to a clinic. A doctor was called immediately, but when he arrived, he pronounced Bishop Rebello dead.

The whole Southern African Catholic community is shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Bishop Rebello.
