Attacks on Christian places of worship on the rise across the USA

In response to the rising tide of vandal attacks on churches in the United States, various Catholic organisations have asked the authorities to give more attention to the problem. In the letter, they appeal for a strong response and recall numerous examples of hatred against Christian symbols.

In a letter sent on the 15th of December to the Department of Justice, Brian Burch, chairman of CatholicVote, criticised the office’s actions, accusing him ofor “not making any sensible efforts to increase the public’s sensitivity to this issue and to respond appropriately to waves of hatred against Catholic symbols. religious: holy places, statues and churches ”.

The letter, addressed directly to Attorney General Merrick Garland, is based on a US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) document that recorded 113 incidents of arson, vandalism and other damage to church-related facilities across the country.

“Last year, as part of such attacks, a statue of Junipero Serra’s father was overturned in California in protest against the” enslavement “of the Indians. Recently, the monument to children killed as a result of abortion was destroyed in the church of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bloombingburg, New York, and the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver, Colorado, “adorned” with satanic inscriptions, “wrote in a document from the US Catholic Bishops’ Conference. “From May 2020 to October this year. over 100 incidents of this kind have been recorded, ”recalled CEO Brian Burch in his letter.
