Pastor Ramnivas Kumar and his wife, Pinky, suffered a violent assault by twelve Hindu nationalists on the 22nd of April in the early morning in Bihar state, leaving Pastor Kumar with a hairline fracture on his shoulder, internal injuries, and Pinky unconscious. The nationalists threatened to kill the Christian couple if they did not renounce their Christian faith.
In the emergency room, hospital staff told the Kumar’s they needed to wait for police because it was an assault case. The Kumar family filed a First Information Report, but the police have done little to investigate the attack.
Two hours later, Kumar told Morning Star News that police said, “these people [Pastor Kumar and Pinky] are involved in conversions, and therefore the villagers beat them up. The family can make no police case.” The couple received medical treatment and left the same day.
However, on the 4th of May, Pastor Kumar started experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 soon after the hospital visit. He remained in the Intensive Care Unit on a ventilator for ten days until he stabilized on the 22nd of May.
