Ambiguous inscriptions projected onto Christ the Redeemer Statue in Brazil

The famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro has been lit up with the slogan "vaccine saves".

Brazil has been one of the countries hit hardest by the virus, with over 436,000 deaths – taking the number-two spot worldwide after the United States. President Jair Bolsonaro’s government has been heavily criticised for its handling of the pandemic – from downplaying the health crisis to failing to secure the needed amount of vaccines in a timely manner.

Many people noticed the obvious play on words used in the recent Rio de Janeiro pro-vaccine initiative. The word “saves”, both in portuguese and in English can be understood as literally saves life or in the Christian way of “redeems”. Many consider it therefore as blasphemous.
