France intensifies control of mosques suspected of “separatism”

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced checks in seventy-six mosques suspected of "separatism." The politician stated that "those which should be closed will be closed."
The action takes place a few days before the meeting of the Council of Ministers, scheduled for the 9th of December, at which the bill “strengthening republican principles” is to be discussed. It aims to “fight separatism and radical Islamism in France.”
According to official statistics, there are four to five million Muslims in France, which represents around eight per cent of the total population.
However, unofficial estimates indicate that there are twice as many, including four to five million from Algeria, three million from Morocco, one million from Tunisia, but also two million from Sahel (sub-Saharan Africa) and 800,000 from Turkey. Muslims have about 2,500 mosques with about 2,100 imams.
