On Thursday, the 8th of October, Fr. Pierluigi Maccalli along with three other captives in Northern Mali was released from captivity.

The four Christians were captured by a jihadist group, probably linked to al-Qaeda. Among the three other hostages was another Italian missionary, Nicola Chiacchio.

The news of their release was confirmed by Italy’s Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio.

“Good news: Fr. Pier Luigi Maccalli and Nicola Chiacchio are finally free and well,” he wrote on Twitter, thanking the Italian intelligence services for helping to secure their release.

The 59-year-old Fr. Maccali was kidnapped on the 17th of September 2018, in an isolated parish in southwest Niger, near the border with Burkina Faso.
