Jihadists continue to attack Catholic communities in Mozambique

Jihadist militias linked to the Islamic State continue to regularly attack Catholic communities in the northern part of Mozambique, especially in the province of Cabo Delgado. arlier this spring, Islamic militants attacked some Mozambique towns, torching buildings and releasing Muslim activists imprisoned for terrorism, according to a report by the organisation Aid to the Church in Need.
At the end of June, Islamic radicals attacked the city of Mocímboa da Praia, destroying a hospital, a school and the local church.
The attack on the town located in the province of Cabo Delgado led to mainly Catholic communities fleeing the area, according to local media. Further disruption in Mocímboa da Praia prevented the arrival of Mozambican forces. Despite a temporary withdrawal of terrorists from the city, new assailants repeatedly attacked the town in the province of Cabo Delgado at the beginning of both June and July.
During a meeting between the Mozambique Episcopal Conference organised in mid-June, the bishops of this former Portuguese colony recalled that the recent attacks by jihadists associated with the Islamic State have already killed several hundred people and expelled another 200,000 citizens from their homes.
