South Africa: St Mary’s Cathedral in Cape Town desecrated

This act of wilful profanation took place in the Catholic Cathedral of Cape Town. The report was confirmed by the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese Sylvester David.

“We are very sad and anxious to confirm the news that has spread around social media that the cathedral has been subjected to vandalism. A ciborium was robbed, along with four silver candlesticks, a gold-plated chalice, two gold-plated patens and cash from the votive candle shrine,” said the Rev. Sylvester David

The clergyman reported that the theft occurred on the night of the 18th of April, although the temple was closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.

He added that while the consecrated hosts were left in the tabernacle by the perpetrators, the host that was in the ciborium disappeared. “So there was a profanation,” the bishop concluded.
