Jerusalem: Restrictions on Holy Week and Easter due to coronavirus

The Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa introduced a number of restrictions on the celebration of Holy Week and Easter. A traditional procession was canceled through the streets of the city on Palm Sunday.

Despite the restrictions related to the coronavirus, the Church does not give up its liturgy. The entire Paschal Triduum will be celebrated (in Arabic) and transmitted from the co-cathedral, with the participation of only a few seminarians.

During the Easter Triduum, media broadcasts of private celebrations should be avoided, so they should be coordinated and organized within the six vicariates of the Patriarchate (for Jerusalem and Palestine; for Israel; for Jordan; for Cyprus; for Hebrew Catholics; for migrants and asylum seekers).

At the same time, the apostolic administrator reminded that one should participate via the Internet in liturgies while they are taking place rather than watching the recordingd later on. He also encouraged families to pray together.
