Sri Lanka: nearly one year after the Easter attacks, the truth remains unknown

Last February, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, expressed doubts about the official explanations about the suicide bombings that took place on the Easter Sunday of April 21, 2019. He also assured of his trust in the new presidential commission of inquiry regarding this tragedy.
On March 8, 2020 the cardinal addressed the faithful of the Notre-Dame-de-Lanka basilica in Tewatte. He vigorously denounced the authorities’ inertia. “The senior government officials should have been interviewed by the criminal investigation department and questioned to find out if they had been warned in advance of the Easter bombings,” Cardinal Ranjith said.
“Those who have not acted under these circumstances are not qualified to receive our Catholic votes. We will take to the streets with our people, whether or not these elections are held,” he warned.
Investigations about the Easter Sunday attacks have revealed that senior figures in the current government were involved but no action has been taken against them.
Legislative elections will be held in Sri Lanka on April 25, 2020 but Cardinal Ranjith announced a protest before that date.
