Burglars smash stained glass window at Leicester Cathedral

Burglars have smashed a stained glass window a short distance from the tomb of Richard III at Leicester Cathedral. The attack took place in the night from March 4 to March 5, 2020. Intruders broke through a decorative window in the chapel of Christ the King at the eastern end of the cathedral, which is next to the room where the last of the Plantagenet kings is buried.

“Damage was caused to a window and a small amount of money was taken”a spokeswoman of the local Police explained. “It’s very sad. We continue to work hard to try to ensure this lovely building can be experienced by everyone. (…) We want it to be a place where all can feel welcome and safe so it’s disappointing that this damage has happened.” a spokesman for the cathedral said to the press.

Raiders already targeted the place of worship several times in 2018, causing around £5,000 of damage as they smashed a stained glass windows to gain access to the inside of the building. On each of those occasions, the offenders entered the cathedral by climbing the low parapets of the Old Song School at the front of the building in Cathedral Gardens.
