Head of Nicaragua’s Episcopal Conference expelled
The Nicaraguan government expelled the Head of the Nicaraguan Episcopal Conference. The expelled bishop found refuge in Guatemla. He is the third bishop expelled from the country in the past year.
Bishop Carlos Enrique Herrera, bishop of Jinotega and head of the Nicaraguan Episcopal Conference, was banished from Nicaragua by the Daniel Ortega leadership. According to sources, the bishop spoke out against one of the Sandinista mayors, which was the main reason he was expelled from his own country.
First, the diocese’s Facebook page, where they usually broadcast sermons, was shut down, and then Bishop Herrera was expelled. Miguel Mendoza, a journalist, stated:
“The bishop of Jinotega, Monsignor Carlos Enrique Herrera, has been exiled from Nicaragua. First, they shut down the diocese’s Facebook page, and then they expelled him from his own country—all because he called the Sandinista mayor Leónidas Centeno sacrilegious for disrespecting the Holy Mass by ordering loud music and dances, which made it impossible to hear the service last Sunday.”
Shortly after expressing his dissatisfaction, the bishop was detained after leaving a meeting with the remaining members of the Episcopal Conference. After his detention, he was deported to Guatemala. Right now, he is staying at a residence of the Order of Friars Minor that he belongs to.
The Sandinista government of the country continues the persecution of churches, especially the Catholic Church in Nicaragua. With more than 1,600 permits for organizations revoked and dozens of priests expelled from the country, the Ortega regime is fueling the oppression further and further.
After Rolando Álvarez, Bishop of Matagalpa, and Isidoro Mora, Bishop of Siuna, found refuge within the Holy See in Rome. Bishop Herrera is the third bishop expelled from Nicaragua in the past year.
