Extremists strangle pastor’s son to death in his sleep in Bihar, India

Hindu extremists broke into Pastor Sushil Kumar's home on the night of the 7th of July.

The attackers pounced on the young boy sleeping on the veranda, broke his hands and strangled him to death. Then, they dragged Nilesh’s body to the street and hung him from a bamboo tree.

The Kumar family has been a victim of continuous abuse for a long time. Local Hindu extremists have been harassing and pressuring them to give up their Christian faith. When Pastor Kumar filed numerous complaints with the police, a group of high-caste Hindus threatened to murder his son.

The local Christian community has been shocked by this brutal attack, as persecution levels are not high in Bihar. Pastor Harendar Kumar, the leader of a nearby church, expressed his profound dismay: “Generally, we do not have much opposition or problems for our ministry. We do not have much persecution in Bihar, so the killing of the pastor’s son is surprising and shocking for all of us.”

Following the loss of the BJP in the recent election, Christian communities are afraid of a surge of revenge and hostility against them throughout India.
