Chinese pastor was released after seven years in prison

John Cao was arrested in 2017 and has spent the past seven years in prison. He worked in Myanmar and crossed the border many times before the Chinese authorities decided to arrest him on charges of illegal border crossing.

John Cao, a pastor who was arrested in 2017 and sentenced to seven years, was released from prison. He served seven years in Kunming Prison, China.

Pastor Cao worked on a mission in Myanmar, in the Wa region, which borders China. He built 16 schools in ethnic minority territories and tried to help people living in poverty.

He and his colleague, Jing Ruxia, were arrested in 2017 on charges of illegal border crossing. Even though the Chinese authorities were aware of their work, which required numerous border crossings, they proceeded with the arrest.

Under arrest, Chinese authorities charged him with “organizing illegal border crossings” and sentenced him to seven years in prison. Later, a UN working group concluded that he was wrongfully detained and called for his immediate release with no success.

While serving his sentence, he strengthened his faith and started writing. During his time in prison, he wrote a book published by the China Aid Association.
