Three bishops were consecrated in China in the past week

Father Taddeo Wang Yuesheng was consecrated as Bishop of Zhenzhou on January 25, Father Anthony Sun Venjun was consecrated as Bishop of Weifang on January 29, and Fr. Pietro Wu Yishun was consecrated as Bishop of Shaowu on January 31.

Between January 25 and 31, three bishops were consecrated in the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

The first one, the Bishop of Zhenzhou, Father Taddeo Wang Yuesheng, was consecrated on January 25. The second is the Bishop of Weifang, Father Anthony Sun Venjun who was consecrated on January 29. The latest bishop who was consecrated is Fr. Pietro Wu Yishun, Bishop of Shaowu, on January 31.

All three consecrations are the achievements of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China. The agreement was signed in 2018 by the Holy See and the government of the PRC and revolves around the appointment of bishops in the PRC.

The Provisional Agreement was already extended twice, in 2020 and 2022. However, it was not particularly fruitful. But seeing the consecrations of three bishops at such a fast pace might indicate a positive change in the future.
