Meeting of Christian leaders in India against sectarian violence
Participants of the meeting discussed various topics and issued a joint appeal.
The National United Christian Forum (NUCF) held its latest meeting on December 14, in New Delhi. The organisation is one of the biggest advocates of the rights of Christians and religious minorities in India. The members of NUCF are Catholic bishops, the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI), which brings together Protestant and Orthodox Churches, and the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI), made up of Pentecostal and Independent Churches.
In their last meeting the members of the organization discussed the ongoing violent conflict in Manipur. They were looking for solutions to reach out to the victims, help their rehabilitation and a way for reconciliation, and achieving peace between the hostile parties.
Fr Anthoniraj Thumma said that,
“The NUCF also resolved to issue a public appeal to have austere Christmas celebrations in view of the Manipur crisis and to raise funds for the cause with money thus saved.”
The NUCF also preparing a joint ecumenical document: “Christian witness in the multireligious world. Recommendations for conduct”. It’s goal to help ease the violence against Christians. They also decided on establishing an interfaith forum to “to promote mutual relations and dispel prejudices and misunderstandings”.
Another proposal was to engage discussion with political parties concerning the elections next year, regarding the situation and needs of Christian communities. At last they agreed on making a study on the state of Christian Education in India.
