The fifty-second International Eucharistic Congress starts on Sunday
Most of the guests have already arrived in Hungary and are participating in the theological symposium, which is taking place in Esztergom. The symposium precedes the one-week-long International Eucharistic Congress, which starts on Sunday, the 5th of September.
The Eucharistic Congress will start on Sunday with an opening Mass and first communions on the Heroe’s square, the most important square of Budapest. Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco will offer the opening Mass in the square, starting at 4 p.m.
An exhibition on the persecution of Christians around the world will also open in cooperation with the Hungarian National Museum and Hungary Helps, the country’s humanitarian assistance program for persecuted Christians.
More than 25 cardinals and bishops will participate in the week of events at the main congress venue, the Hungexpo Budapest Congress and Exhibition Center.
The highpoint of the congress will be the closing Mass, celebrated by Pope Francis on the 12th of September. Pope Francis will be the first pope to take part in an International Eucharistic Congress since the year 2,000.
