Armenian churches destroyed by Azeri forces in Nagorno-Karabakh
Last fall after Azerbaijan's military victory over the (unrecognised) autonomous republic of Karabakh and the Armenian army, which was quickly overtaken or even disbanded, Azerbaijan recaptured sixty per cent of Nagorno-Karabakh. This was lost at the start of the 1990s. Today, the Russian army is present on the ceasefire line with what remains of Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh and around two landlocked Armenian monasteries.
The Armenian commission to Unesco reports the destruction of several Armenian churches. In Mehkavan, Zoravor Astvavatsin Church was desecrated on the 16th of November and destroyed on the 25th of March.
In Shusha, a strategic position located in front of Stepanakert and abandoned by the Nagorno-Karabakh troops towards the end of the conflict, the Green Chapel (Saint Ovannès Mrktch) was destroyed.
In this village, the Azeri inhabitants who inhabited it mainly fled to Azerbaijan in 1992, and were replaced by Armenians who fled in 2020.
